Draupadi Murmu elected as country’s first female tribal president, to take oath on 25 July

Delhi: Draupadi Murmu has been officially elected as the 15th President of the country. In the presidential election, she got more than 50 percent of the votes, while her rival Yashwant Sinha got less votes. The country will has got the first tribal president in the form of Draupadi Murmu. Draupadi Murmu, 64, will set the record for becoming the youngest President in the country as she will take oath on July 25.

As per the sources, Draupadi Murmu got votes of 540 MPs. After the victory, all the big leaders including President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh have congratulated Murmu.

All the MLAs except one MLA from Kerala voted for Sinha while Murmu got all the votes from Andhra Pradesh. She will be the first president to be born after independence and the youngest to hold the top post. She is also the second woman to become president. Her victory was sealed only after the third round of counting, when the returning officer announced that Murmu had secured over 53 per cent of the total valid votes.

The opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha congratulated Murmu on her victory in the presidential election. He said that every Indian hopes that as the 15th President, she will act as the “Guardian of the Constitution” without any fear or favour. In a statement, Sinha thanked the leaders of the opposition parties for choosing him as their candidate in this election. “I also thank all the members of the electoral college (Electoral College) who voted for me.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President J. P. Nadda went to Murmu’s residence to congratulate her. In a series of tweets after the announcement of Murmu’s victory, Prime Minister Modi said that her tenure as MLA, Minister and Governor of Jharkhand was “excellent”.

The Prime Minister said that Draupadi Murmu’s life, her early struggles, her service and her outstanding success inspire every Indian. He said, “She has emerged as a ray of hope, especially for the poor, downtrodden and backward.” He thanked all the MPs and MLAs who voted for Murmu in the presidential election by rising above party politics.

Murmu was born on June 20, 1958 in Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. From Rairangpur itself, she had taken the first step on the ladder of BJP. She became a councilor in the local notified area council in 1997 and a minister in the BJD-BJP coalition government of Odisha from 2000 to 2004. In the year 2015, she was appointed as the Governor of Jharkhand and held the position till 2021.
